‘Let Lucians be Lucians’

Recently, an individual was ridiculed by a number of ruthless online users who found fault with his appearance. Whilst browsing through the comments under the post, I came across a baffling comment—I just could not wrap my head around what was said. The individual, obviously amused, stated that others should adopt a sense of humour, and ‘let Lucians be Lucians’.

I was appalled and could feel myself getting more annoyed by the second. I wanted to exclaim that it is not okay to make such a mindless comment. I sat angrily in front my computer, pondering about the things that were said.

People jokingly commented on the post, giving absolutely no thought to the things they had written. The comment that remained with me is, ‘let Lucians be Lucians’—how asinine is that? To think that this is the individual’s idea of being Saint Lucian!

But it should come as no surprise as I have seen and heard it before. Apparently, some St. Lucians think that being ‘Lucian’, is when one is hurling insults at another, and or is in a drunken stupor: because that, ‘makes us cool’ and ‘acceptable’. As ludicrous as this may seem, there are people who take pride in this behaviour. Mind boggling isn’t it?

We have a long way to go as a society. We have come a long way, that is unquestionable, but we still have great walls to climb.

It starts from the home, all the way to the school, the person you meet on the street, and most importantly, you. You can’t rely on your parents’ and other influential figures for everything. Furthermore, I’m sure you have heard this old adage: “you can lead a horse to the water, but you can’t make it drink.”

Parents have to play their part, teachers, and other influential persons must too. But at the end of the day, if you don’t realize the need for change, intend to work on changing your negative ways, then you have failed terribly.

Ask yourself this—is my behaviour okay? Have a talk with yourself (yes, it’s okay to do that). See where you fall short and look at the areas that require change. Most times, it is not easy, that is a guarantee, however, like any good thing you work hard for, the results are worth it.

Have a good weekend everyone.
