His talent is almost indescribable: the kind you have to witness to understand the speaker’s reaction. It is original, refreshing and enthralling. No second guessing, Brandon Perido Harding deserved the title of Piton Soca Star 2015.
Originally from Guyana, Brandon came to Saint Lucia at age 13. An entirely different environment, the Soca Star who resides in Vieux Fort, admitted that it was somewhat difficult to adjust. However, time has elapsed, and he fits in perfectly, and relishes what we call the “Lucian life”.
The artiste fell in love with music and performing at a tender age and his appreciation for the two reflects in his personality.
“I started competing in the junior calypso competition from Prep B, (Grade 2),” he said, stating that he had performed well and had placed in the top category on various occasions.
He also won the GTNT jingle and song competition in 2011, a competition which he says is similar to Piton Soca Stars Guyana.
He later re-entered calypso by participating in Saint Lucia’s Junior Calypso competition, however, then, he was unsuccessful.
“I didn’t place; I then met a man from Vieux Fort from JAKO productions, Anderson Reynolds. He saw me at a karaoke singing,‘Turn Your Lights Down Low’ by Bob Marley. He liked my vibe and told me to come visit him at his office and from since then, I’ve been working with him,” Brandon said.
The 21-year-old, who has never had another job outside of singing, spoke on his signature style.
“Every time I do a song, I never do it the same way. I always do it differently, he said.
The Soca Star, who admires the styles of soca stars Machel Montano, (Trinidadian), Alpha, (Saint Lucian), and deceased American pop singer Michael Jackson, stated that he appreciates various forms of music and is an all-rounder.
With his immense love for music, he looks forward to participating in next year’s groovy or soca competition.
Now that he is the 2015 Piton Soca Star, he is ready to work and is willing to collaborate with other artistes.
The Piton Soca Star, who is the winner of $10,000, the grand prize, will be performing at upcoming events like Sexy in Black and Colour Me Red.
