The last time St. Lucians got a dose of one of Jamaica’s hottest dancehall sensations was at the St. Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival two years ago. Popcaan had then garnered an immense fan base on the island as the protégé of ‘World Boss’ Vybz Kartel. Many questioned if he would be able to hold his own on such a big stage. Of course those who doubted the artiste’s capabilities clearly weren’t die-hard fans; they were pleasantly surprised with his command of the stage and his adoring fans.
Fast forward to the present, those who had missed out were about to get a chance to redeem themselves. The 27 year old, responsible for a surplus of mega hits including summer favourites “Ravin” , “Clean” and “Junction” to name a few was scheduled to make an appearance in St. Luica courtesy of promoters O.M.G.
On Saturday the popular Jamaican dancehall artiste, Popcaan performed at the Johnson’s Centre in Gros- Islet delivering a performance that surpassed all expectations. The crowd was pumped ‘Way Up’ when Popcaan finally graced the stage thanks to the fixating entertainment delivered by Hollywood Hp and other artistes.
Poppy was greeted by a troop of enthused fanatics eager to commence the ‘Unruly Rave.’ The response from the crowd was phenomenal, especially the ladies. A group of lucky ladies was able to escape the confinement of the packed crowd and get a little closer to this dancehall wizard where they showcased their gyrating skills.
It was a show super-charged with high energy and rhythmic dancehall music. As anticipated he had the crowd grooving, singing, chanting and dancing along to his greatest hits. He continuously performed crowd favorites stopping only to interact with them. Among those performed that night was ‘Way Up’, Unruly Rave’, ‘Love Yuh Bad’, ‘Everything Nice’ and ‘Unruly Prayer’ where he threw up prayer hands during the meditative song, and of course ‘Best Friend’. These up-tempo tracks were nearly impossible not to move along to. Ecstatic joy permeated every corner of the centre that night.
The event ended with the M.C. announcing that O.M.G had already made plans for their second instalment of OMG Fest. The news that Lady Saw would be coming to Saint Lucia instantly had ladies planning their outfits for the show that is scheduled for November 7. The promise of a second artiste was also made but not revealed. Fortunately for our readers, we can confirm that the King of the Dancehall, Beenieman will also be on what is without a doubt the biggest show to close the year.
