What an Independence! Yes, our 37th Independence was stellar at best. Patriotism was shown by Saint Lucians island-wide as they wore their national colours, displayed the flag, attended events and spoke about the many things that make the island great on and off social media throughout the month of February.
We hope that this devotion is eternal and is displayed year round—we are still, and always, the Helen of the West after all.
With that said, let’s discuss the National Celebratory Rally. Those who attended the event held on February 22 at the Mindoo Phillip Park, surely, can easily tell you how superb it was. The speeches were powerful and inspiring, not dull, as some feared.
Speakers included the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Dr. Kenny D. Anthony, and Second Vice President of the National Youth Council and soon to be recipient of the Queen’s Young Leader Award, Tevin Shepard, who highlighted achievements of individuals island-wide making reference to individuals like Groovy Monarch Arthur and Herma Demacque, a member of the media and amongst others.
The event which was hosted by Oneka Mckoy of Choice TV and Dr. Anthony George of the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports was well attended.
Entertainment included performances from artistes and poets including singer Flora ‘Jessy’ Leonce, Junior Calypso Monarch Ashley Jules, Groovy King Arthur, the Ave Girls School Choir and Black Crayon, poet, amongst many others.
The ceremony was wonderful and a day for Saint Lucians to truly relish all that the island has to offer.
After a great celebratory rally, the Jèté dance competition commenced followed by the S.L.A.M concert.
