Success in life is based more on what others can do for you

“Success in life is based more on what others can do for you than on what you can do for yourself.” This quote by Al Ries made me pause my entire surfing experience and forced me to give it some thought.  For years I have been hearing people say, and proudly I might add, that they don’t need anyone to achieve success in this world. To be honest, I believed it. After all you are the one putting in all the work so why not claim all the reward for yourself, right?

It is that mentality that has us thinking everything in life is a big competition and we focus more on ourselves as opposed to observing our surroundings and understanding how we can use the assistance of people around us to achieve maximum success. In our mind, there is a set number of winners and losers. And if somebody else wins, that’s one less opportunity for me.

What most of us have failed to realize is that the mindset of competition is based on a faulty principle that one more success in another’s life equals one less success in mine. According to Jousha Becker, “there is wonderful freedom and grace in realizing the size of the pie is not finite – that in reality, the pie keeps growing. Another’s success does not mean you have less opportunity. In fact, another’s success can actually be your success if you had the opportunity to enable, encourage, and promote them along the way!”

Think of a sports agent and how successful or should I say rich he can become if his clients are all successful in their respective fields. A business place will crumble if the workers can’t execute their tasks successfully; and if you are given a group project, if one person fails, most times the entire group fails to get a grade they truly deserve.

So as you go about your day I will leave you with these words “to be successful you must provide a product that other people want. That product must be helpful to people so that they can use it to make their life better. Whether that product is consumable or that product is a business opportunity doesn’t really matter. We need one another in this thing called life.”

Have a great weekend ya’ll and God bless.
