Courage is admirable. Courage often does not come easily and when one musters the strength to pursue something difficult, (something positive of course), then the individual should be applauded.
Last weekI attended the National Carnival Queen Pageant where I witnessed a contestant being teased mercilessly by members of the audience. And not a handful either. I sat there, horrified and deeply upset, thinking how discouraging a situation like this can be for the contestant and how unkind we can be at times.
Now I’m always up for a good joke, but I find no humour in something like this. It’s not easy to go up on a stage, especially in front of a big audience, and if you’ve been there before, then you know that all too well. It’s even more frightening at times as there is the pressure to impress the audience and sometimes, individuals fail to do so. And that too can be discouraging.
I watched as the contestant poured her heart out, only to be slapped in the face with harsh words and undisguised laughter. Now had the performance been an absolute disaster, then I would understand why the individuals acted the way they did; it’s hard to restrain oneself in a situation like this, however, this was not the case.
Granted, the performance was not the best; however, this was no excuse for some in the audience to behave in that manner.
I must give the contestant credit for staying in character—that’s not easy to do. She could have easily walked off stage, but refused to do so.
Sometimes we are so quick to point fingers and laugh at others, but the thing is, had we been in that person’s shoes, then it would have been a different story altogether.
We need to be mindful of these things.
With that said, I hope you all are having a fantastic weekend. There are so many events to look forward to—the crème de la crème being carnival itself. Yesss.
Take care my loves; be safe.
