It was not too long ago, (July you’ll recall), a new Carnival Queen was crowned. Tyler Theophane won the hearts of many Saint Lucians and it was clear that she had given the performance of her life on that defining night. She was effortless and stunning—unforgettable.
I sat down with the Choiseul beauty earlier this week to discuss what she had been up to, amongst other things. Tyler, was a pleasant surprise—a burst of fresh air. Her sparkling, free-spirited nature matched mine and the interview seemed to be more of a girl chat as opposed to something formal. And within minutes, I connected with her and was thrilled that she was our cover pick; not because of her title, but rather, because of her warm, welcoming nature.
Questioned on what the experience has been like so far, she smiled, telling me that it iswonderful, but like many other things, presented its challenges.
“When I heard there was a second audition, I was like ‘Oh my God! Now I should be worried!’”
She continued: “I am not going to say it’s been easy: nothing comes easily, but it’s been really good. I have attended different events, have done a number of interviews and I plan on doing some big things.”
Throughout her reign, she has done a number of things. The Choiseul resident shared that she has gone on to help young women who aspire to be like her, crowned various queens, has spoken at various events and has also opened a number of shows, amongst other things.
Currently, Tyler is working with the Carnival Queen Committee on bringing a ‘Girls Club’ to life, which will help young women in developing their skills and assist them in becoming the best that they can be.
The 18-year-old, who turns 19 on January 22, has a lot to be thankful for. For starters, she made history last year, when she became the youngest contestant to be crowned Carnival Queen.
Not bad for a “country girl” huh?
“I don’t believe in that “country girl” type of thing,” Tyler said, when I questioned her about what it is like for her, as the term usually comes with a number of stereotypes.
She continued: “You could come from wherever and you can be the biggest person that you want to be, it’s all in your mind. It’s not about where you came from, it’s what you bring to the table, what you do; it’s the difference that you want to make.”
Choiseul will always be home for the young queen. Tyler describes the community as “peaceful, friendly and welcoming.”
“It feels like everybody is related,” she added.
I questioned her about her fondest memories of Choiseul—she was eager to share.
“Ooh!” she exclaimed, sharing that her “river days and tree climbing days,” are some of her favourite memories—those moments were priceless and indelible. Not forgetting the time spent with her family members who were also her friends: “We used to go out to dance and sing just for doing it sake; that’s the type of stuff I remember doing the most,” Tyler said, reminiscing and relishing the good old days.
Soon, Tyler will be representing Saint Lucia overseas in pageants Jaycees International Queen Show and Miss Carival in July and August respectively. She is hoping to come out on top at both pageants and stated that she is working hard to do so.
Although last year’s Carnival Queen Show was “all the rage”, many have argued that the show has lost its appeal and that past queens were far more memorable than recently crowned ones.
To this, Tyler responded: “I worked hard and continue to do so; I never wanted to be just one of the carnival queens.”
She continued, “I want to be different; I want to be memorable. I want to leave a mark, to let others know that it’s not just a Carnival Queen from July and you’ll see her next July; I am working hard so individuals can see and hear about me. I want to know I had a good reign and I actually did stuff during my reign.”
