Saint Lucia celebrated 38 years of Independence on Wednesday February 22, and a number of activities were held island wide to commemorate this remarkable event. Amongst those activities was a grand Independence Rally which took place on the Daren SammyCricket Ground.
A number of beaming Saint Lucians attended the event proudly displaying their blue, yellow, black and white attire (some), with flags and hands raised high.
The event featured a military parade, performances from a number of local artistes, poets and dancers (amongst others).
It was a perfect way to spend the holiday; the turnout could have been better however. Some individuals opted to stay home and watched the activities on television from the comfort of their couch, whilst others worked and or enjoyed the holiday elsewhere. But for those who attended, it was the best place to be.
Although we admittedly still have a long way to go, we have reached milestones. Let us relish these moments and continue to display our national pride. For we are: the land of beaches, hills and valleys…the fairest isle of all the earth, the Helen of the West—we are, I am, you are… Saint Lucia.
