As part of our December Festivals this year was the traditional Festival of Lights which featured the Lantern Festival and the turning on of the Derek Wallcott Square’s Christmas lights.
The festival traditionally marks the start of the Christmas season in Saint Lucia, and is also associated with Saint Lucia or Saint Lucy, the patron saint of light, symbolizing the triumph of light conquering dark, good overcoming evil and the renewal of life.
The festivities which were scheduled to begin from7:00 p.m. with a street parade from the Castries City Hall featured a procession of stilt walkers, masqueraders, fire eaters and lantern bearers making their way to the Derek Walcott Square.
The festival was held under the patronage of Her Excellency Governor General Dame PearletteLouisy with the theme “celebrating a community Christmas – the life we share”. Scores of Saint Lucians who made their way to the Derek Walcott Square were treated to a concert like atmosphere with drama, dance and other indigenous performances including musical sets from artistes such as Boo Hinkson, Ezra D’Funmachine, the Calabashers, Linda “Chocolate” Berthier and the Royal Saint Lucia Police Band.
National Carnival Queen, Miss Chancy Fontenell, Mayor of Castries Peterson Francis and Min. for Equity Lenard Montoute switched on the lights at Festival of Lights.
