I have newfound respect for those who do this job

A friend of mine hosted an event recently and after the event ended, I decided to ease the squeeze by cleaning up immediately.

As I picked up the rubbish from the ground, I realized that a few eyes were on me and immediately I felt uncomfortable, and secretly wished that the individuals would not think this was what I did for a living. I’m ashamed to say this now and shortly after the thought crossed my mind, I realized this was poor thinking.

I had never looked down on others who cleaned for a living but I realized that though I never did, I did not want others to think for a second that this was my way of life.

After bending over for hours, I had newfound respect for those who did this job every single day of their lives. The job is not an easy one especially as it takes a toll on one’s body and a number of persons who are in the field, unfortunately, are underpaid and underappreciated which makes the job even tougher.

Although it is always advised that persons pursue an education so that they can get better paying jobs, and live comfortably, this does not mean that we should judge or mistreat custodians. It is also important to note that not all custodians are uneducated, ashamed or unhappy either. Many take pride in what they do as their job is to enhance and uplift their country, which in fact, is a big deal and just as important as a teacher’s job or a lawyer’s.

We all play a role in society and though some jobs may seem ‘smaller’ than others, this does not mean that the persons carrying out these tasks are less important.

We need lawyers, doctors, scientists, actresses, designers, teachers, receptionists, comedians, bus drivers, cashiers, vendors, farmers, waiters and waitresses too— every job is important. Remember, we can’t do everything on our own.

This definitely was a humbling, eye-opening experience for me. Like we’re often told, “we never know what the future holds,” so it’s important that we practice what is right.

On another note, I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Cornelius George. I pray that you all find the strength to get through this difficult time. I heard about Cornelius’ untimely passing whilst I was writing this article and it’s so unfortunate that this vibrant young man is no longer with us. Cornelius, you truly will be missed.

Take care guys.

Sincerely, always,

Rae A.
