One of the most anticipated events of the season, ‘Soca Kingdom’ starring Machel Montano, proved to be a total letdown—the reviews which flooded Facebook the day after solidified that, with many demanding a refund and answers to unanswered questions.
The event took place at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground on July 11, and fans showed up in large numbers to see the King of Soca in action. The Trinidadian artiste had performed in Saint Lucia many times in the past but had not been to the island in years; his return to the Saint Lucian stage was expected to be nothing short of terrific, but this time, the King of Soca fell short and failed to ‘mash up’ stage.
The artiste who performed a slew of his singles including hits like ‘Soca Kingdom’ and ‘Fast Wine’, started off with a bang, but eventually fell flat. His backup dancers, though talented, did little to improve the artiste’s performance and those who hoped to see ‘Colour Me Red Machel’ were sorely disappointed.
The chit system for drinks and ‘expensive’ prices also left many frustrated. Many attendees dubbed the show a ‘cheat’ and a ‘scam’ and called the organizers out for putting on a show of this nature.
Machel Montano’s fanshoped ‘Soca Kingdom’ would be the fete of the season, but unfortunately, it was just the opposite. Better luck with Kassav?
