Born and raised in Saint Lucia, twenty-three-year-old Shartoya Jn. Baptiste’s passion for the arts ignited from the age of seven. Shartoya now resides in Baltimore, Maryland where she studies Theatre Design and Production at Towson University. After her studies, she plans to return to her island home to develop the Performing Arts industry. Her most recent accomplishment is the creation of her dance brand called “SHR” (pronounced “shur”), where she showcases her Caribbean choreography online through dance classes she conducts. She has performed all over St. Lucia, the Caribbean and in the USA. Shartoya has expressed her concerns with the facilities and equipment for artists in St.Lucia and said “I have performed on various unsafe stages, rehearsed on concrete with my bare feet, changed in unfit dressing rooms and the list goes on. The facilities here are either limited, expensive, depleted or non-existent, and I want to change that. This was one of the reasons why I created The SHR Experience”

The SHR Experience is a one-day dance culture exchange workshop slated for Saturday 19th January, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at The Gros Islet Secondary School Auditorium. This full day workshop provides St. Lucians with the opportunity to practice various dance genres such as Afrobeat, Soca, Hip-Hop, Dancehall and the popular St. Lucian Traditional Folk Dance -Bélè. The SHR Experience creates an avenue for sharing dance culture and building networks in the local, regional and international dance communities. This event will feature Jamaal Bruce AKAFreakout, Hensley “Afweche” Paul and Shartoya Jn. Baptiste AKA SHR from St. Lucia, as well as three foreign choreographers who have worked with celebrities likeMachel Montano, Mariah Carey, Azaelia Banks, Fergie and the popular dance competition series “So You Think You Can Dance”. These international icons are Nandi Yard from Barbados Terry Wedington and Sayquon Keys from the United States.

After the completion of The SHR Experience, Shartoya plans on awarding two St. Lucian dance groups with dance equipment for their studios.
