Another Successful Experience

Carry a towel and extra clothing in case you get too sweaty, carry along food (even though there are restaurants and supermarkets nearby), ensure you have comfortable shoes, carry socks or dance shoes for a contemporary class and last but by no means least, water will be provided!

This message was the last prep for dancers who had signed up for the SHR (pronounced “shur”) Experience last week Saturday and an indication of what they should expect at Sportivo in Rodney Heights.

On a health tip, dancing is one of the most fun ways to achieve and maintain physical fitness! Involving both aerobic and anaerobic activity, dance promotes flexibility, strength, muscle tone, and fine motor skills. The Experience promised to offer the aforementioned and much more.

Only her second such class to feature local and international choreographers, Shartoya Jn Baptiste, the brain child behind the full day dance workshop was overwhelmed` by the level of support she has received thus far and is eager to see the dance community in Saint Lucia thrive. She had already dedicated proceeds of the SHR Experience towards purchasing dance essentials for Saint Lucian dancers long before the first ticket was sold.

It was also her aim that dancers who attended the sold out workshop would be able to network and create lasting relationships with locally, regionally and internationally acclaimed choreographers.

“That’s the objective of the workshop”, she said. “To provide St. Lucian dancers with the opportunity to learn from, collaborate, and network with active dance practitioners from around the world. “This event creates an avenue for networking in the local, regional and international dance communities and encourages dancers to view dance as a profession.”

The Saturday class which opened its doors from 8: 00 a.m. and featured classes from St. Lucian dancers Gnan (Hip Hop Fundamentals) and Jaimie Forde (Saint Lucian Folk DanceClass), Barbadian sensation Royal G (Soca Choreography) and from the United States of America -TSU Terry (Baltimore Club Hip Hop Choreography) and Chris Gayle (Contemporary Choreography).

According to dancer Crystal Octave, “Chris Gayle’s Contemporary/Modern class was filled with knowledge. She spoke in detail about the importance of one’s attitude and focus when learning. Royal G challenged everyone in her session where she focused mainly on Hip Isolations. TSU Terry was a ball of energy. His footwork was intimidating at first but he broke down the steps to a beginner’s level and by the end of his session everyone was able to execute his choreography with ease.”

She also spoke very highly of the Saint Lucian choreographers citing that Gnan spoke about the fundamentals of Hip Hop. The various aspects such as Breaking and Popping and also finding time to teach them a very fun routine together with a few tricks. “Jaimie’s St. Lucian Folk Dance session was really a nice way to start the day. He spoke in detail and taught us many different routines of the traditional folk dances such as the Polka and La Comet. These were a great way for everyone at the workshop to meet each other through the switching of partners.”

The SHR Experience which also included interval performances from Ezra D’ fun machine and XO Nadz is expected to be an annual event having been added to the calendar of activities for the 2020 Nobel Laureate Month celebrations and individuals are already looking forward to the next installment.
