Word on the street: “We can do more about crime.”

Toyaa Baptiste – There’s nothing we can do to stop crime but we can improve the situation. We used to have so many things in place for young people but they just disappeared… I’m not sure if it’s because of the pandemic. Our leaders should put things in place for the young boys, that way, they can be more productive. They should really invest in sports and things of that sort. Summer programmes or summer jobs can help as well.

Nadine Casimir – Honestly, it’s affecting people. People no longer have freedom to do as they please, they always have to be on the lookout because someone could rob you at any time. I think crime can be reduced; I also think programmes can help because if young people see their friends participating in these programmes, then perhaps they’ll realize they can do better. It’s important for those who are in authority to go to the communities and speak to the young people as well. It wont stop crime, but it will help.

Oswan Calixte – In terms of crime, the situation can be curbed by increasing the amount of policing in communities. They can probably implement a system where there are undercover police officers mingling in certain areas; it can be done in a way where officers are not at risk. Also, the level of crime it’s something that’s been going on for a while, but I think the government and the police force can do better.

Cornell Alcee – A lot of youth don’t have a chance after they leave secondary school. You leave school at 16 or 17 and nobody in any workplace treats you with respect. Another thing is they always want 10 years of experience, etc. when you just left school. That’s not fair. I recommend that young people be given at least two years of training or something. Give the fellas something to do. Even in sports they don’t have anything available to us so they need to provide those kinds of things so young people can get into something.

Kiana Felix – I believe something can be done about crime; we need more opportunities for the young children because they are the ones who turn into criminals. If our leaders provide them with the opportunity to come out of the gangs, I believe that crime would be limited and possibly be stopped. Our leaders also need to go around and talk to the young people.
