Word on the Street: “Jamaica bans music that promotes violence. Should Saint Lucia follow?”

Stephanie Burin — “I think the same thing should be done in Saint Lucia because nowadays the young people are very violent especially at the different secondary schools. Now you find students fighting with teachers and students want to kill each other so that kind of music is really not good for young people. I also think that once people put God first in their lives change is possible and they will be able to turn away from violence.”

Brianna Auguste — “I don’t think they should promote it on the radio since its influencing the young people to go and kill people. It’s really not a nice thing to lose one of your family members because it leads to depression and nobody would like to see their family in that state. People should not follow what these artistes are saying in their songs. I think artistes can make music without promoting violence. Radio stations should play positive music more so it can have a positive impact on the lives of (their listeners).”

Garvey — “I don’t think the songs should be banned. That’s just entertainment because most of these artistes are not even doing the things they’re promoting. That’s like an occupation for some of the fellas because they didn’t do well in school so they they look for an interest and sometimes they find music is the best thing and they use it to their advantage. I don’t think they should promote that kind of message every time though. Some of the artistes need to cool off on some things; they shouldn’t put guns in their videos. But I don’t think the radio stations should be banned from playing these songs because some of the artistes mix it up so Peter cannot pay for Paul. My advice to people is to not take the songs literally. Don’t fail your mother.

You don’t want to see mommy smile? That way she won’t have to worry about people shooting you when you go out. You want your mother to smile because most of them take it hard already so you have to be there to help them when they get old and they cannot help themselves.”

Amy Julian — “I believe Saint Lucian radio stations should be banned from playing music that promotes violence because children like to follow (others). They like to have idols. It should be stopped because some children actually go and do what the music says which is very bad. That will not be good for (them in) the future.”
