Word on the Street: “Do We Really Take Sexual Abuse Seriously?”

Serrina Charles — “It’s definitely not being taken seriously. The men don’t get sufficient time in prison (some are not punished) and the women are shamed. (We hear things like) “they’re asking for it”. Sexual assault is a very serious offense and any individual who decides to take that leap and assault another human being needs to pay extensively for that.

I believe (some) parents need to figure out why they don’t believe their child because that is a serious accusation and to not believe your child is just wrong.”

Jesse Francis — “No, we don’t take it seriously. Everybody thinks women are the only ones getting raped, but men get raped too. Government needs to put a programme in place for both men and women so that they can get the help that they need.”

Nyve Francis – “I think we take it seriously because when children are sexually abused the authorities bring the (perpetrators) in and they question them. It also gets attention on the news. One thing I don’t like however is when mothers don’t believe their children and take their partner’s side. That’s not nice because if my daughter comes to me and tells me someone is touching her (inappropriately) I surely will take that seriously.”

Jahesha Hutchinson — “People don’t really take it seriously. There are a lot of cases out there and they’re not getting solved.”
